Employee Spotlight: Shane

This month, we are proud to recognize Shane, our Mississauga Day Program leader, who has been a member of the Mind Forward family for 16 years! Every day, Shane plays an important role in enriching the lives of our clients through engaging programs and compassionate support.

Shane’s path to working with individuals with acquired brain injuries was influenced by his own personal experience. Having suffered multiple concussions in his youth, he understands firsthand the importance of head safety and the impact of brain injuries. This inspired him to dedicate his career to helping others navigate their own paths to recovery.

For Shane, the most important part of his role lies in the daily interactions with our clients. From socializing and joking around with them to witnessing their progress, no matter how small, Shane finds fulfillment in the smiles and appreciation he receives from those he supports. His commitment to their well-being is unwavering, and his genuine care shines through in every interaction.

One of Shane’s most cherished memories working at Mind Forward comes from his experiences at The Boundless School, our annual outdoor adventure program. From witnessing clients conquering high ropes courses to scaling rock climbing walls, Shane feels so much pride seeing them surpass their own expectations. These moments remind him of the resilience and strength inherent in every individual.

Outside of work, Shane is an avid sports enthusiast and enjoys spending time with his dog, Betty. Whether it’s playing soccer with his friends or exploring the great outdoors through biking and kayaking, Shane enjoys staying active and connected with nature. To maintain balance and prioritize his well-being, he also enjoys practicing yoga.

Shane is an active member of Therapeutic Recreation Ontario (TRO), continuously seeking opportunities to enhance his skills and stay informed about the latest developments in his field. His advice to aspiring recreation professionals is to find passion in what you do and let your enthusiasm inspire others to join in the fun. His diverse interests and experiences, from chemical engineering to volunteering with Alzheimer’s Society Peel, have shaped his journey and led him to his fulfilling career at Mind Forward.

On a bittersweet note, Shane has plans to move out East in the very near future. We will always value his contributions at Mind Forward and the profound impact he’s had on our clients’ lives. His dedication and compassion will be fondly remembered, and we wish him all the best in his next chapter. Thank you, Shane, for everything!
