Jonathan joined the Mind Forward community in 2018 and has been part of our Assisted Living program ever since. He’s also a regular face in our Day Program groups at head office. Despite the challenges of living with a brain injury, Jonathan approaches each day with courage, determination and a positive attitude.
Of course, life has its tough moments. Jonathan admits that getting along with his housemates can sometimes be tricky. But he manages these situations by focusing on the positives and using breathing exercises his “staff-dad” taught him. He’s also motivated by the encouragement from staff, who have been crucial to his recovery journey. “My favorite staff make me happy. Mum and my sister help me too,” he says.
When asked about how he copes with the ups and downs of life post-injury, Jonathan shared that it’s important to ask for help when he needs it and to maintain a healthy lifestyle. “I cope by trying to get help … I focus on eating right and staying away from smoking and drugs.” His advice for anyone navigating a similar journey is simple: “Stay healthy and eat your Brussel sprouts, even if you don’t like them!”.
A recent highlight for Jonathan has been going to the movies and being able to stay focused for the entire film – a personal achievement that left him and his staff feeling proud. “I surprised my staff,” he says, clearly pleased with his progress. And when things feel tough, Jonathan turns to his love of music: “I’m the DJ for the house. I match songs to all my staff. Music makes me happy”.
Jonathan is grateful for the support he’s received from Mind Forward. “I have somewhere to stay and staff who help take care of me,” he reflects, appreciating both the guidance and independence the program has provided him.
In his free time, Jonathan enjoys playing music, watching movies, chatting with staff, and sneaking in a nap or two. He’s a big Star Trek fan, and has fond memories of watching the show with his father.
Thank you, Jonathan, for letting us be a part of our journey and reminding us all that with a positive outlook, we can face our challenges head on!
