Spend a few minutes with Nick and you’ll probably leave smiling. He’s quick with a joke, loves a good conversation, and can find a connection with almost anyone. Whether he’s talking about music, movies, sports, or the latest rap he’s written, Nick has a way of bringing people into the conversation.
If you asked Nick what keeps him going, his answer would come very quickly: Rocky. Not only the movies, but what they represent. Getting back up, believing tomorrow can be better than today, and refusing to let one difficult chapter write the rest of the story. Nick has carried this mindset with him since he was 15 years old, when he sustained an acquired brain injury after being struck by a vehicle while crossing the street.
Today, he focuses on things that bring him joy. He writes rap lyrics and poetry, enjoys boxing and yoga, and loves sharing his favourite music with others. He still remembers performing Michael Jackson’s Man in the Mirror at his elementary school talent show when he was eight years old. It’s a memory that still makes him smile.
Recovery is something Nick continues to work on every day. When he feels the frustration building, he takes a moment to think about the future he wants for himself. Writing in a journal, staying active, and leaning into his faith help him stay grounded. He encourages others to find something that made them happy before life became difficult and to keep doing it, even when it’s hard.
Nick is proud of how far he has come. He progressed from using a wheelchair to a walker and now walks with a quad cane. He even became a public speaker because he wanted others to know that progress is possible.
Since moving to Mind Forward’s Williams House in 2025, Nick has continued building his independence. He credits the staff with helping him stay sober, manage his money, and create routines that support his goals. Most of all, he appreciates knowing there are people who genuinely care about him.
But if you ask the people around him what they notice first, they probably won’t mention any of that. They’ll tell you that Nick is the first to strike up a conversation. That he remembers people’s interests. That he enjoys karaoke, sharing his latest rap, and chatting over a Tim Hortons coffee. They’ll tell you that his sense of humour is contagious and that he brings energy to the house simply by being himself.
Nick’s biggest motivations are his dad, the memory of his mom, his dog Cooper, and of course, Rocky. Every day, he reminds everyone around him that resilience doesn’t always look like a dramatic moment. Sometimes it looks like showing up, making someone laugh, writing another verse, or starting another conversation.
That’s what makes Nick such an important part of the Mind Forward community.
