For Kyle, life changed in 2013 when he was struck by a vehicle while walking. The accident caused a severe traumatic brain injury, and his recovery has been filled with many challenges – but also with many milestones that have shown his determination and drive.
In the early days after his injury, Kyle relied exclusively on a wheelchair. Today, thanks to years of persistence, he is able to walk again, which is an achievement he is incredibly proud of. “I never thought I could walk again, especially because my left side is weaker than my right side”, Kyle shared. “Getting up and out of a wheelchair has been my biggest progress. I’m proud that I’m more mobile”.
That same fighting spirit shows up in everything Kyle does. “I hate it when people say you can’t do something. But you can! Not to prove anyone wrong…I do it for myself.” No matter how difficult the day is, Kyle’s approach is to just keep pushing forward.
Kyle attend Mind Forward’s programs on a regular basis – from bowling and games groups to social activities – he finds the recreation valuable but also the connections he’s made. “Socializing and interacting with people…the activities and groups are helpful,” he explained.
Family support has played a big role in his journey, and his outlook on life has shifted since his injury. “I take nothing for granted because you never know. If you want to do something, you should do it – why wait?”
When he’s not working toward his rehabilitation goals, Kyle enjoys listening to music, exercising, and talking about cars, especially vintage and luxury models. And he if could have dinner with anyone? Snoop Dogg”, he shared with a grin.
Kyle’s story is yet another reminder that resilience isn’t about moving quickly. It’s about never stopping. And for him, his goal is crystal clear: to be more independent every day.
