At Mind Forward, we are constantly inspired by stories of resilience, hope, and triumph over adversity. Recently, our leadership had the privilege of experiencing such a story firsthand when Kimberley Black and her husband, Rob Tardik, presented an emotionally moving talk that left a lasting impression on all of us.
In the summer of 2020, Kimberley was violently attacked by a stranger while out for a walk in her neighbourhood. This unprovoked attack led to Kimberley being diagnosed with global brain damage and placed in a week-long coma as she awaited reconstructive jaw surgery. The healing support she received in the months that followed, by health care professionals, her husband, and the community, enabled her to make the cognitive recovery needed to defend her master’s thesis shortly after returning home.
Kimberley’s determination to use her experience to raise awareness about the causes of gender-based violence was particularly powerful. Her goal is to inspire victimized women to reclaim their power. One of the most poignant aspects of the presentation was the story behind their advocacy campaign, #bpositive. What began as the simple discovery of Kimberley’s blood type during her time of trauma evolved into a mantra and movement. The #bpositive campaign now serves as a source of hope and strength for many people, and reminds us all to stay positive and resilient in the face of adversity.
Kimberley’s husband, Rob Tardik, is a renowned musician. His support and love for Kimberley were evident and inspiring. To our delight, Rob performed one of his songs, which beautifully complemented their message and underscored the emotional journey they have both endured and continue to navigate together.
We were deeply moved by Kimberley and Rob’s story. It reminded us of the importance of supporting those who have experienced trauma, advocating for change, and building resilience within our community. Thank you, Kimberley and Rob, for your powerful message and for inspiring us all to #bpositive.
