The Canada Disability Benefit: Your Guide & Next Steps

Canada Disability Benefit

We understand that financial challenges often accompany the journey of living with an acquired brain injury. Programs like the Disability Tax Credit and the new Canada Disability Benefit are important supports that can help ease some of that burden, providing added financial stability and peace of mind.

The Canada Disability Benefit (CDB) offers financial assistance of up to $200 per month for eligible individuals with disabilities who have low income. Payments officially begin in July 2025, with eligibility retroactive to June 2025 for approved applicants.

Who is eligible?

To qualify for the CDB, you must first be approved for the Disability Tax Credit (DTC) – a federal non-refundable tax credit that helps reduce income tax for people with severe and prolonged impairments in physical or mental functions.

If you already have your DTC approval, you’ll need the following to apply for the Canada Disability Benefit:

  • Your Social Insurance Number (SIN)
  • Your direct deposit information (for payment)
  • Your 2024 Notice of Assessment (to verify your net income – Line 23600)
  • Your mailing address

Eligible applicants must be between the ages of 18 and 64. If your application is approved after June 2025, you may receive back payments for any months you were eligible but had not yet started receiving payments.

When and how to apply?

Applications opened June 20, 2025.

You can apply:

  • Online using the official Government of Canada application portal:

Canada Disability Benefit Application (Service Canada)

  • By phone – Toll-free (within Canada): 1-833-486-3007
  • In person at any Service Canada Centre

Even if you haven’t received a letter in the mail, you are still able to apply.

What is the Disability Tax Credit (DTC)?

The Disability Tax Credit is an important step toward accessing the Canada Disability Benefit. The DTC is designed to help offset the additional costs related to living with a disability. You or your medical practitioner will need to complete an application to determine your eligibility.
