Anjula’s Story

Mind Forward’s Outreach Services offer supports ranging from community integration and engagement to support with educational and vocational goals to clients who live independently in the community.

Here is Anjula’s story.

“A young driver ran a red, speeding, and t-boned my car. I screamed as the steering wheel was wrenched out of my hands. My head was hit twice, once on impact, and again as it rebounded off the car frame.
Disoriented, I thought my kids and newborn baby were in the car. Then I recalled they were safe at home. Alternately, I became frantic, convinced they’d died in the accident. For months I lived this nightmare, unable to discern reality from fiction.
I routinely had xylocaine injections to my head and neck. The shots hurt like hell, but the ongoing feeling of a hot knife plunging into my skull was more intense. I deteriorated until the pain became so crippling, I returned to hospital. With my history of encephalitis and concussions, my car accident had a life-changing impact on my brain. I was placed in brain injury rehab.
Take away abilities, roles, work—things we use to define ourselves—and what’s left? This plagued me for years. I concluded it’s the essence of who we are, our humanity, not our capabilities, that gives us value.
An update… Since my accident, I’ve written five novels plus several children’s books on mental health issues”.
