Merry Christmas December 25

December 25th is Christmas Day, a Christian festival celebrating the birth of Jesus of Nazareth, a spiritual leader whose teaching form the basis of this religion. There are no clues in the New Testament in regards to December being the birth of Jesus. One of the first dates identified for the birth of Jesus was by Sextus Julius Africanus in 221 and later became the universally accepted date.

December 25th was a popular holiday in the Roman Empire for the Christianizing of the “Dies Solis Invicti Nati” (“day of the birth of the unconquered sun”); “Celebrating the winter solstice as a symbol of the resurgence of the sun, the casting away of winter and the heralding of the rebirth of spring and summer.” (https://www.britannica.com/topic/Christmas).

Some of the common customs on December 25th include exchanging gifts, decorating Christmas trees, attending church, sharing meals with family and friends and, of course, waiting for Santa Claus to arrive. Christmas Day has been a federal holiday in Canada since 1870.
