Saturday, February 10th, 2024 marks Chinese New Year, taking place on the second new moon after Winter solstice. Chinese New Year has great historical and cultural significance, involving many religious and cultural traditions. Celebration through food, prayer and family gatherings is believed to bring good fortune for the coming year. It is also referred to as the Spring Festival, as it welcomes spring, new beginnings and fresh starts. Festivities last for 16 days, culminating with the Lantern Festival on February 24th. The Lantern Festival symbolizes reunions, socializing and freedom.
This lunar year is represented with the sign of the Dragon, and is the fifth of twelve-year cycle of animals in Chinese astrology. Traditionally, the dragon is an auspicious symbol of strength and power. It is associated with good fortune, wisdom, success, protection and masculinity.
